Theme Tunes and Sheet Music:

This year’s theme tunes are “Karhunpeijaispolska” (Bear Hunting Feast Polska), a well-known piece for the 5-string kantele, and “Three Engelskas”, a medley of three Engelska melodies collected from different regions of Finland. Engelska is a type of Nordic folk dance that is popular throughout the Nordic countries. Let us fill Japan with these bright and joyful dance tunes!

Sheet Music:

“Three Engelskas”

The year 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of the passing of Antti Rantonen (1877-1961), often referred to as “the last great 5-string kantele player.” Both Bear Hunting Feast Polska and part A of “Three Engelskas” were selected from the repertoire of Antti Rantonen.

Born in Harvavesi, a town in the North Ostrobothnia region of Finland, Antti Rantonen developed his own distinctive playing style by combining plucking techniques and chordal accompaniment methods that had not previously been used together in traditional 5-string kantele performance. This innovative approach became known as the A. Rantonen Style.

About theme tunes:

Karhunpeijaispolska(Bear Hunting Feast Polska)

A traditional tune known as part of the repertoire of Antti Rantonen (1877-1961), a renowned 5-string kantele player.

3 Engelskaa(Three Engelskas)

[A] Engelska (Sutiputi) from Haapavesi
A traditional tune known from the repertoire of Antti Rantonen (1877-1961), a 5-string kantele player from Haapavesi. The tune is also known by the names “Engelska” and “Sutiputi.”

[B] Angelisco from Rauma
A dance melody collected in Rauma in 1848 by H. A. Reinholm (1819-1883). The original tune is in D minor, but for this arrangement we have followed the presentation found in SaariJärvi’s Kantele Playing Guide, which introduces the melody in the A Dorian mode, resulting in a brighter character (The sheet music is written in D major).

[C] Angläsmasurka (Tre-engelska) from Lappträsk
S.L.S 6, 7. An old dance tune preserved in Lappträsk (Lapinjärvi), a Finnish-Swedish cultural region of Finland. The melody contains a lively, mazurka-like rhythmic feel within the Engelska dance style, which is the origin of its name. The tune is also known as “Three Engelskas.”

The melody was collected by Viktor Allardt (1862-1922) in 1887 and later by Fridolf Andersson (1888-?) in 1915.
